Mendis Company ordered to pay unpaid taxes of Rs. 5800 million .

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered W. M. Mendis and the directors of the company to immediately pay the VAT of Rs. 5800 million that the Mendis Company is said to have not paid, without giving any excuse.

When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Oshad Migara Maharachchi, the director of the company in question, Arjun Aloysius, who is named as the defendant in the case, appeared before the court.

At that time, the lawyer appearing for the directors of the defendant company told the court that although a part of the outstanding taxes has been paid by now, the relevant documents cannot be found due to the property being seized by the bank.

The Additional Magistrate, having considered the facts presented, pointed out that the time within which the defendant company was required to pay the taxes has passed.

Accordingly, the Additional Magistrate ordered the defendants to immediately pay the relevant taxes and also ordered them to present their case on the next court date whether or not they will pay the taxes again without delay.
