Special meeting of Parliament on lands used by security forces in the North

A meeting was held at the Parliament Complex recently to review the progress of the ongoing program regarding government and private lands currently used by security forces in the Jaffna and Palaly areas.

The meeting, which was held as a continuation of the previous discussions on land-related issues, was chaired by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd.), the Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation and the Minister of Energy, Anura Karunathilaka, the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, and the Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, Ruwan Kodithuwakku.

The meeting reviewed the current progress and discussed the need to accelerate the government’s efforts to address land tenure issues, support social and economic growth, and streamline infrastructure development in coordination with regional administrative mechanisms. These initiatives are also seen as an important step towards the national reconciliation process and resettlement.

During the meeting, special attention was also paid to several key issues, including the completion of boundary realignments, expediting the compensation process, and prioritizing the restitution of identified land plots to their rightful owners.
