Four people die in accidents every three hours in Sri Lanka.

The Ministry of Health says that about 30 lives are lost in the country every day due to various accidents. Dr. Samitha Siritunga, a specialist in the Ministry’s Non-Communicable Diseases Unit, stated that four people die every three hours due to various accidents. He stated this while participating in a media briefing held in Colombo.

“Every year, approximately 8,000 to 10,000 people die in accidents in Sri Lanka. That means that every three hours, we lose four lives to various accidents.

That means approximately thirty people die in accidents every day. Most of the time, we talk about deaths due to traffic accidents. But we have forgotten the number of deaths due to falls due to various reasons, deaths due to drowning, deaths due to electrocution, deaths due to snake bites. We have forgotten the deaths that occur in this way. Therefore, out of the total number of deaths, about 30 people die in accidents. This is a tragedy because it is preventable.”
