Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that he does not have information regarding the disappearance of $2.5 million from the General Treasury funds.
Therefore, he said that the Ministry of Finance will clarify the facts in the future. The Minister said this while participating in the weekly cabinet decision-informing media briefing.
President’s Counsel Maithri Gunaratne has sent a letter to the Speaker requesting a parliamentary investigation into the incident, and the Speaker will review the facts stated in the letter and decide whether an investigation is necessary.
Current reports indicate that these funds have not reached the expected creditor country as part of a settlement of $22.9 million due in September 2025.
A group of opposition members, including Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who gave information in this regard, had also expressed their views. They say that out of the $22.9 million in the loan repayment process, $2.5 million has been diverted to a third party and that the debtor country has not received that money.
