The Deputy Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, who is in power with the National People’s Power, was arrested by officers of the Bribery Commission today. He was arrested in the Battaramulla area.
It is reported that the Deputy Mayor has demanded this bribe for awarding the tender for cleaning the Kurunegala bus stand and public toilets.
The Deputy Mayor has demanded Rs. 3 million for awarding the relevant tender and Rs. 5 million per month after receiving it. Accordingly, the Deputy Mayor has been arrested while going to collect the Rs. 3 million for awarding the tender. He is scheduled to be produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
He was elected to the Kurunegala Municipal Council representing the All Ceylon People’s Congress. He was elected to the Kurunegala Municipal Council when the power was established and he was given to the National People’s Force and became its Deputy Mayor.
