A tense situation has arisen regarding the death of Ishara Harsha Kumara from Kiriwaththuduwa, who had been arrested and detained at the Homagama Police Station. Relatives of the 29-year-old claim that his death resulted from an assault by police officers while he was in police custody.
Furthermore, they allege that when the suspect was taken away for questioning, he was in such a condition that he could not even walk, and that he had to be carried by several police officers.
The relatives further allege that when the suspect was returned to the police cell, there were visible injuries on his body and he was bleeding. They claim that although they insisted he be taken to the Homagama Base Hospital, he was already dead by the time he arrived there.
The Police Media Division states that the suspect was brought to the Homagama Police Station following a drug-related raid; he reportedly suffered a sudden medical emergency while there and subsequently passed away after being hospitalized.
