Political sources say that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the United National Party have shown the need for an alliance before the next election to a group of representatives of the two parties at a major embassy in the country.
The embassy has shown the representatives of the two parties that the government will gain the most from the UNP and the UNP contesting separately in the next election and that if the opposition is defeated for the third consecutive election, it will be destroyed and impossible to unite it again for a while.
Opposition MPs have admitted during the discussion that under the leadership of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, two presidential elections, a general election and a local government election have been lost, and that his popularity is rapidly declining.
It was also emphasized during the discussion that even the government now recognizes that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe successfully fulfilled his responsibility to save Sri Lanka from bankruptcy and move it towards development goals in the face of the economic crisis it faced in 2022, and therefore, the alliance between the SLFP and the UNP is the best way to empower the right-wing camp by urgently resolving the ongoing crisis.
