Protest against the Attorney General .

A protest was organized in front of the Attorney General’s Department this morning against the actions of the current Attorney General, President’s Counsel Parinda Ranasinghe.

The organizers had said that this protest was being held against the biased actions in some legal works, the failure to promptly implement the law against corrupt individuals, their protection and the corrupt practices taking place in the Attorney General’s Department. However, the limited participation in this protest was a special feature.

Meanwhile, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka had announced yesterday that it would hold a protest this afternoon, expressing its concern over the various posts recently published on social media targeting the Attorney General.

The association states that some people are trying to unfairly interfere with the independence of the Attorney General’s office through social media posts and that the Attorney General should decide whether to file charges or indictments against a suspect based on the facts presented to him by the investigating officers.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka further states in its statement that the decisions of the Attorney General can be reviewed by a writ of certiorari before the Court of Appeal or by a fundamental rights petition before the Supreme Court.
