The budget of the Galle Municipal Council, which was formed by the National People’s Power and the United People’s Front, was defeated by a majority vote on the 15th. The budget was voted on for the second time today (24). There were 21 votes in favor of the budget and 15 votes against it.
Accordingly, Mayor Sunil Gamage had left the council early, informing that the budget was passed by a majority of 6 votes.
The composition of the Galle Municipal Council consists of 36 members.
However, a tense situation arose in the council after the mayor left the council early.
Opposition members did not allow the municipal secretary to leave the council and detained her inside the council. Then, an opposition member took the mayor’s seat and took steps to call for a vote again. The opposition received 17 votes and 19 members were absent from the council.
At the same time, the police had to be called in to control the heated council.
Before the budget vote today, opposition members also held a protest in front of the Municipal Council carrying protest signs.
