Three prison guards at Welikada Prison have been arrested by the Borella Police in connection with the death of an inmate who was detained at the prison on drug charges, said Police Media Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wutler.
The deceased inmate had escaped during a cleaning operation at the Welikada Prison on the third day and was taken back into custody by prison officers. Later, the inmate suddenly fell ill and died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
The inmate’s relatives allege that his death was caused by an assault by prison officers.
