South Indian film star Vijay’s (Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar) Tamilaga Vetri Kasagam (TVK) party has achieved a huge victory in the 17th Legislative Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. He is close to becoming the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, winning 108 seats in the 234-seat state assembly, Indian political sources say.
The DMK and AIADMK parties, which have ruled Tamil Nadu for more than 50 years, have suffered a setback this time, with the DMK party winning 59 seats and the AIADMK party coming in third place with 47 seats.
The TVK party has secured 35% of the registered votes in Tamil Nadu, or more than 1.6 crore votes. However, it needs 118 seats to form a majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. It needs 10 more seats, and the TVK party leaders have already started discussions for that.
The high voter turnout of 85.1% recorded in this election is the highest in the country’s recent history. It is evident from the analysis of the election results that the rural people, especially, have voted with great confidence in Vijay Chandrasekhar’s party.
A large number of promises were made for Vijay Chandrasekhar’s election victory. These include a monthly allowance of Rs. 2,500 for women, 8 grams of gold as marriage assistance and free saris, the establishment of a dedicated ministry and university for artificial intelligence (AI), the provision of 5 lakh government jobs, and a monthly allowance of Rs. 4,000 for unemployed graduates.
Vijay Chandrasekhar was a Tamil separatist. He publicly called for the return of the island of Kachchativu and made passionate statements about the rights of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. It is noteworthy that his election banners and posters were displayed even in the Jaffna peninsula.
