The Welfare Benefits Board has issued a statement saying that the rumors circulating on social media that compensation beneficiaries had been paid twice in April are false. The statement states that it was due to a technical error and that steps have been taken to recover the excess amount.
According to a statement issued by the board, which is under the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, yesterday (07), this situation has arisen Due to the urgent steps taken to pay benefits before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Due to the lack of facilities to make payments twice a month in the system, excess payments have been credited to the accounts of a group of beneficiaries when making payments outside the system (Slip file format). The statement states that the Welfare Benefits Board, which acted immediately upon identifying this, informed the relevant banks and took steps to transfer the excess money to the government account.
Since 49,759 beneficiaries who were credited with excess money have already received the money, the statement also states that their money (Rs. 248,795,000.00) is to be recovered from the allowance scheduled to be paid in May 2026.
The statement further states that certain groups are spreading false information for narrow political purposes and the public should be alert about it.
