Several organizations and political parties have already filed petitions before the Supreme Court, seeking a ruling that the 22nd Amendment Bill to the Constitution, which has been approved by the Cabinet, is unconstitutional.
Legal professional organizations such as the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and the Free Lawyers’ Organization, as well as political parties such as the Sarvajana Balaya and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, have also filed petitions before the Supreme Court against the amendment.
The first of these petitions has been filed by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
The petitioners are requesting that a ruling be issued stating that if the relevant bill is to be passed, it must be approved by a two-thirds majority vote in Parliament and that it must also be approved by a referendum.
