Motor Vehicle Number Plate Printing Resumes

The printing of vehicle number plates, which had been suspended for more than a year, officially commenced this morning (08) under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena. The event was held at the printing unit established at the Motor Vehicle Inspection and Training Center of the Department of Motor Traffic in Werahera.

The printing activities were temporarily suspended after the official contract period of the private company that had been printing vehicle number plates in the country for 22 years expired in April last year.

A formal procurement process was initiated by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to select a new company suitable for number plate printing, and accordingly, the selected South Asian Technology Company and the Department of Motor Traffic have resumed the printing activities of these number plates under a contract.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, who attended the event, said:

‘Necessary steps have been taken to carry out vehicle number plate printing activities in a standardized manner by selecting the relevant institutions according to the evaluations of the technical committee in a formal procurement process. We are taking steps to print the number plates for the number plates that were stopped and for all newly registered vehicles on a daily basis. As soon as the printing of the number plate is completed, the vehicle owner will be informed about it via a short message within two hours under the new program.’
