Government is trying to suppress opposition politicians by involving them in court cases.

A meeting was held at the UNP office on Flower Road in Colombo between opposition party leaders and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. They discussed the actions taken by the present government against political parties with different views.

Speaking there, Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the government is trying to control opposition political activists and other groups by making different accusations and taking them to court.

He also strongly objected to the intimidation of lawyers and organized social media campaigns against Buddhist monks.

He said that some groups are using social media to run a big campaign against Buddhist monks, and that there is also a program to frighten lawyers.

He also said that the government is trying to limit the activities of political parties and the freedom of social media activists. He said the government is trying to weaken the opposition through political revenge by filing different court cases.

Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he is ready to work together with all opposition groups to protect the rights of the people and the country’s culture, even if there are political differences.

He said, “We must stop arguing and come together. First we must protect what we have. I and the United National Party will support any action you take.”
