The United National Party has filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding the advance warning that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe would be remanded for 14 days.
On August 21, Sudatta Thilaksiri had stated on his YouTube channel that the former President would definitely be arrested tomorrow and remanded for 14 days.
Accordingly, a group of lawyers representing the United National Party has filed a complaint with the CID, requesting an investigation into the issuance of such a statement before any official action is taken.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says that it cannot be a coincidence that a YouTuber made a prediction before the arrest of a former President.
“A YouTuber predicts the arrest of a former president before it happens? It can’t be a coincidence, could it be planned? If true, it’s a sad day when something as sacred as law and order is turned into a cheap drama,” he wrote in a post on ‘X’.
Sudatta Thilakasiri has uploaded another video on his social media space after the former president was remanded. He claims in the video that he used his universal power to announce that Ranil Wickremesinghe would be remanded for 14 days.
However, several parties have already expressed their views that his preemptive announcement that the former president would be remanded in prison is an insult to the judiciary and that it is damaging to the independence of the judicial system.
Accordingly, sources in the UNP say that they hope that the CID will investigate Sudatta Thilakasiri’s power in the future.
