Police opened fire last night (12) on a van that failed to heed orders to stop in the Asgiriya area of Gampaha. Intelligence reports have reportedly confirmed that the van was being used to distribute narcotics in the Gampaha area.
Acting on information received by the Western Province Intelligence Division, a team of officers from the Weliweriya Police Station attempted to stop the van last night; however, the driver tried to drive on without stopping, prompting the officers to open fire.
Upon spotting the police, the driver attempted to flee, endangering other vehicles on the road. Police officers then fired at the van. The driver sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Gampaha Hospital under police guard. A subsequent search of the van revealed 15 grams of heroin and 9 grams of ‘Ice’ (crystal methamphetamine). Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
