Religious and civic leaders seek court permission to intervene in Sale’s petition.

A number of parties have reportedly sought permission from the Court of Appeal to intervene and present their arguments in the writ petition filed by retired Major General Suresh Sale challenging the legality of his arrest and detention.

It is learnt that several prominent monks and civil society organisations are among the parties who have sought permission.

It is learnt that the interlocutory petitions filed by Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara, Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thero, Ven. Dapane Sumanawansa Thero, Dimbulagala Rahulalankara Thero, All Ceylon Buddhist Conference President Chandra Nimal Vakishtha and the Global Sri Lankan Forum are among the parties who have filed such interlocutory petitions.

They are requesting the Court of Appeal to issue an order admitting them as respondents to the writ application currently pending.

They say that the Channel 4 documentary has been used as a basis for the arrest and detention of Major General Salle, but that official investigations have revealed that the documentary lacks credibility and that Salle was not in Sri Lanka during the relevant period.

They also point out that the FBI report and Australian Federal Police reports have also attributed responsibility for the Easter attacks to the Saharan Hashim group.
