Latest data released this morning (12) by the Disaster Management Centre confirms that 161,451 individuals belonging to 49,344 families across eight districts have been affected by the El Niño weather phenomenon. The statement notes that 36 Divisional Secretariat divisions have been impacted by El Niño conditions and that measures have been taken to provide drinking water to all those affected.
The report further states that drinking water distribution is currently underway for 161,451 individuals belonging to 43,221 families residing in these 36 Divisional Secretariat divisions. The districts facing this drinking water crisis are Ampara, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Batticaloa, Matale, Monaragala, Polonnaruwa, and Ratnapura.
The report states that the Monaragala district is the most severely affected, with 42,429 individuals across 13,139 families suffering the consequences. It further notes that drinking water is currently being distributed to all those affected by the El Niño conditions.
