No more signing of agreements with IMF

Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe emphasizes that there is no discussion within the government regarding entering into another successor agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after March 2027.

Responding to questions raised by journalists during a television program held yesterday (27), he said that the current government’s objective is to successfully conclude the existing agreement and not to move towards new agreements.

He pointed out that the government will work to complete all the necessary restructuring in the country by March next year, after which there will be no need to remain in agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Expressing further views, he said as follows.

“There has been no discussion about a new agreement with the IMF. The discussion is being held to conclude the current agreement. It is important to remember that this is an IMF agreement. This is not just about giving dollars. This includes fiscal, governors, and financial changes. Then by March of next year, we will have completed all the restructuring to a large extent. Then there is no need to go for another agreement beyond that.”

However, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved the fifth and sixth reviews for Sri Lanka yesterday. Accordingly, Sri Lanka is scheduled to receive another $695 million in the future.
