Investigations into hackers who entered the Ministry of Finance

It is reported that the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development has already filed a complaint with law enforcement agencies regarding a theft committed by a group of cyber hackers who entered the computer system of the Department of Foreign Resources of the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.

During the month of January 2026, based on information identified regarding the payment of a sum of foreign currency, the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development has approached the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SL-CERT) and the Computer Crime Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Police.

Based on the investigations conducted through them, a complaint has been filed with the Criminal Investigation Department and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Central Bank.

An internal preliminary investigation has also been conducted in this regard, necessary actions have been taken and disciplinary action has also been taken against several officials.

It is believed that the $2.5 million that was supposed to be paid to another country was credited to the account of the third party due to the intervention of these hackers.
