Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has resigned from his post in support of the investigation by the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate alleged irregularities in the coal importation and related power generation process. At the same time, the Secretary to the Ministry, Professor Udayanga Hemapala, has also resigned from his post this afternoon (17).
Handing over their resignation letters to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, they have stated that their aim is to provide maximum support to this investigation process and ensure its impartiality.
He has also indicated that complaining to the Criminal Investigation Department, especially regarding coal imports that have occurred since 2009, is an important step in the anti-corruption journey.
