Nine Vietnamese nationals were arrested in the Godakanda area of Poddala on Tuesday afternoon on charges of committing financial fraud via the internet, the Police Media Division said.
The suspects entered Sri Lanka on tourist visas and were carrying out a plan to conduct fraudulent financial transactions via the internet when they were arrested.
The raid was carried out by Galle Police officers on an intelligence tip-off provided by the Boossa Military Intelligence Unit. A laptop computer and 84 mobile phones believed to have been used for these illegal activities have been taken into police custody and the suspects have been handed over to the Poddala Police for further investigation. They are scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court.
