Postal strike continues. Army buses to distribute parcels

Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara says that military buses were used to divert postal items piled up at the Central Postal Exchange to various areas. The Postmaster General said that the items and letters were directed to postal terminals in this manner.

The strike has been in effect since last Monday, citing 19 issues including the overtime allowance issue and the issue of recording the arrival and departure of fingerprint machines.

The United National Postal Employees’ Union, the Sri Lanka Free Postal and Telegraph General Employees’ Union, the United Postal and Telecommunication Employees’ Union, the Sri Lanka Free Postal Services Union, and the Sri Lanka Postal Employees’ Front are supporting this strike, along with 23 trade unions. They had also started a continuous satyagraha in front of the Central Postal Exchange in Colombo yesterday (22).

Meanwhile, out of the 653 post offices across the island, 169 were open yesterday. The number of sub-post offices, 3211, remained open yesterday.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni said that except for two of the postal workers’ demands, the rest of the demands can be resolved through negotiations.
