An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 7.4 struck off the northeastern coast of Japan just moments ago, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The agency warned that the quake could trigger a tsunami as high as 3 meters (9.84 feet) in Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures.
