The Cabinet has approved the expeditious preparation of a new bill to detain suspects and convicts who are remanded in custody in appropriate cases under house arrest as an alternative to the severe congestion in prisons.
In accordance with the policy approval given by the Cabinet on an earlier occasion, the Legal Draftsman has commenced the process of preparing this bill. Accordingly, the draft prepared by the Bill Draftsman was given preliminary approval at the Cabinet meeting held on 23 June 2025 to further review it.
Several other important amendments were identified there, and the Bill will be finalized expeditiously by incorporating those provisions. The Cabinet has decided to provide instructions to a legal drafter as follows. This approval was given by the Cabinet following a proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration.
