Thousands Join Richmond Walk to Celebrate 150 Years of Richmond College

Galle, June 19 – A grand commemoration march organized to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Richmond College, Galle was held Friday evening (19), which was attended by students, teachers, alumni, parents and well-wishers from across the country.

The Richmond Walk 2026 commenced from the College premises and proceeded to the Samanala Grounds, Galle, symbolizing the rich heritage and enduring legacy of one of Sri Lanka’s most distinguished educational institutions.

The procession was led by Principal Mr. Prabath Withanage and attracted an estimated 6,000 participants, including current students, members of the academic staff, former principals, retired teachers, old boys, parents, and supporters of the College.

Among the distinguished participants were the College’s highly respected, legendary former Principal Mr. B. Sooriarachchi, together with several eminent Richmondites and distinguished guests who joined the celebrations.

The event also saw the participation of numerous prominent alumni who have excelled in various fields of national importance, reflecting the far-reaching influence of Richmond College on Sri Lankan society.

A special attraction of the walk was a mobile replica of the historic Darrell Hall, one of the College’s most treasured architectural and heritage landmarks. The display drew considerable public attention and highlighted the institution’s rich historical and cultural legacy.

The procession was further enlivened by the performances of the College’s renowned marching bands, whose music added colour, energy, and pageantry to the occasion. Students representing the College’s sports teams, Prefects’ Guild, clubs, societies, and various extracurricular groups also took part, showcasing the vibrant and multifaceted life of the school.

The celebrations culminated with a grand entertainment programme held at the Samanala Grounds from 6.30 p.m. onwards, providing participants and well-wishers with an opportunity to continue commemorating this historic milestone in a festive atmosphere.

The Richmond Walk forms part of a series of events organized throughout the year to celebrate the College’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary, honouring 150 years of excellence in education, leadership, service, and nation-building.
