The Sri Lankan team further consolidated its dominance in the 100m event at the 4th South Asian Athletics Championships being held in Ranchi, India, winning gold medals in both the 100 X 4 relay events.
Accordingly, on the second day of the competition, Sri Lankan athletes won four gold medals.
The Sri Lankan men’s 100m relay team won the gold medal by finishing the race in 39.99 seconds, setting a new tournament record. The Sri Lankan women’s team won the gold medal, finishing in 44.70 seconds, beating the strong Indian team in second place.
Dhananjana Fernando, Amasha de Silva, Rumeshika Ratnayake and Safiya Yamik represented the Sri Lankan team.
Yamik also won the gold medal in the 100m individual medley while Amasha won the silver medal. Kalinga Kumarage won the gold medal in the men’s 400m event.He finished the race in 45.21 seconds.
Kalhara Indup won the bronze medal, finishing in 46.81 seconds. Sayuri Mendis won the bronze medal in the women’s 400m event. Her finishing time was 59.18 seconds. Nadeesha Ramanayake came in fourth place.
Tharindu Dasun won the gold medal in the high jump event with a time of 2.17 meters. Roshan Ranatunga won the silver medal in the men’s 110 meters hurdles event with a time of 13.90 seconds. Lakshika Sugandhi won the bronze medal in the women’s 100 meters hurdles event.
Sri Lankan veteran middle distance runner Shuri Nimali Liyanarachchi won the silver medal in the women’s 1500 meters event. She finished the race with a time of 4 minutes and 25.52 seconds. Sri Lanka won a silver and bronze medal in the men’s 1500m.
Rusiru Chaturanga won the silver medal with a time of 3 minutes and 55.12 seconds.
RM Nifras won the bronze medal with a time of 3 minutes and 55.95 seconds. Sri Lanka won bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s discus throw events.
Former long jumper Milantha Sampath won a bronze medal for Sri Lanka in the discus throw event with a throw of 49.35 meters. Vinodani Lakmali won the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw event with a throw of 43.01 meters.
Sri Lanka has won a total of 23 medals, including 8 gold medals, at the end of the second day of the 4th South Asian Athletics Championships. India has won a total of 32 medals, including 7 gold medals.
