The police have issued the following statement regarding the reported facts regarding an assault on a police officer by a group including National People’s Force MP Shantha Padmakumara.
It states that on the 20th at around 08.40 pm, a police constable attached to the Suriyakanda Police Station was returning home after completing his duties when a group including the MP attacked him and stole his motorcycle near the Kalugala Temple.
The police statement also stated that at around 10.10 pm on that day, Jathika Jana Balawegaya Ratnapura District Parliamentarian Shantha Padmakumara had also lodged a complaint at the Kolonna Police Station, stating that a police constable at the Suriyakanda Police Station had stopped his motorcycle, blocked the road and attempted to assault him while he was travelling in a cab from Kalugala to Halwinna.
The police constable’s motorcycle was also taken into custody by the Kolonna Police from the road near the Kalugala Temple, and the police officer in question was transferred to the Embilipitiya Hospital after being admitted to the Kolonna Hospital, the police said in their statement.
In the relevant statement, the police stated that the hospital’s medical report stated that the officer’s breath smelled of alcohol, and that since there were no drug concentrations in the officer’s urine samples, arrangements have been made to take blood samples and send them to the Government Analyst’s Office to test whether he had consumed alcohol.
