Germany’s DW channel released an investigative documentary this week questioning the process for selecting troops for UN peacekeeping operations.

The program alleged that Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have even deployed officers involved in torture and extrajudicial killings for UN peacekeeping operations.

The documentary was produced through a joint investigation by German broadcaster DW, Sweden-based investigative agency Netra News, and German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The film condemned the silence of the United Nations regarding the deployment of officers as peacekeepers by Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, who have serious allegations of human rights violations.

During a press conference on Wednesday, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said Secretary-General António Guterres was aware of the allegations and had watched the documentary.

UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric explained that there are three parts to the peacekeeping screening process. One is self-certification; the second is certification by the sending country. In addition, he mentioned that there is also a procedure in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
