The Sri Lanka Air Force is set to induct a modernized and upgraded Kaffir multirole fighter aircraft into its fighter fleet within the first three months of next year.
Sri Lanka signed a $50 million deal with Israel Aerospace Industries in 2021 to modernize its Kaffir fighter jet fleet. Accordingly, five Kaffir aircraft from the Sri Lanka Air Force’s No. 10 Squadron are scheduled to be upgraded.
The jets are being integrated with advanced radars, sensors, communication systems and new helmets to enhance their operational capabilities.
The upgrade follows the successful modernization of the Kaffir fleet in Colombia by Israel Aerospace Industries.
Although only the engines and essential components will be sent to Israel, the majority of the repairs will be carried out at the Katunayake Air Force Base, with the assistance of Israeli experts, an Air Force spokesperson said.
Once the modernization is complete, the aircraft will receive a 15-year warranty from the Israel Aerospace Industries.
