Shashi Weerawansa sentenced to 2 years in prison. Appeal dismissed.

The Colombo High Court today (11) dismissed the appeal filed by Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who was sentenced to two years in prison for possessing an illegal passport. Accordingly, the High Court has confirmed the one-year prison sentence imposed on her by the Magistrate’s Court.

Announcing her verdict, Colombo High Court Judge Manjula Thilakaratne stated that there was no legal error or injustice in the verdict given by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court against the defendant. Accordingly, the High Court Judge ordered that the appeal filed by Shashi Weerawansa be dismissed in its entirety.

The judgment in this appeal was delivered by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court in 2022, where Shashi Weerawansa was found guilty of the relevant charge and sentenced to two years imprisonment and a fine of one hundred thousand rupees (100,000). She filed this appeal with the Colombo High Court, requesting that she be released from the said sentence and fine.

The High Court, which considered the said appeal at length, took steps today to reject her appeal in its entirety, stating that the Magistrate’s Court’s judgment was correct.
