Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will embark on two foreign trips in September. The President, who will be going to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly session, is also scheduled to embark on a state visit to Japan.
The President will leave for the United States on September 23 and is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly on September 24, the Foreign Minister said. At that time, the President is scheduled to explain his government’s foreign policy and other policies. In addition, Minister Herath said that the President is expected to meet several other world leaders in parallel with the General Assembly session.
From New York, the President will depart for Osaka, Japan on September 27. There, he will have the opportunity to attend the Expo 2025 exhibition. The President will also participate in the Sri Lanka Day celebrations at the Expo, where Sri Lanka’s unique contributions in the fields of culture, tourism, trade and investment will be showcased.
After the Expo, the State Visit to Japan will commence from 28th September at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Bilateral talks between the Sri Lankan President and the Japanese Prime Minister are scheduled to begin on 29th September.
The Minister said that the discussions in Tokyo will focus on increasing employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in Japan and improving economic relations between the two countries, and that the government is expected to propose the establishment of a vehicle assembly plant in Sri Lanka.
