It is reported that two petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the bill to abolish the pensions of members of parliament that has been presented to parliament.
One petition has been filed by former members of parliament M.M. Premasiri, Navaratne Banda B.M. Deepal Gunasekara and Samansiri Herath. The other petition has been filed by former members of parliament Piyasoma Upali and Upali Amarasiri.
In this petition filed through Attorney-at-Law Sanath Wijewardene, the petitioners have stated that certain clauses of the proposed bill violate fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution of this country.
Accordingly, the petitioners have requested the Supreme Court to rule that if the relevant bill is passed, it should be passed by a special majority vote in Parliament and approved by a referendum.
