Loans from Hadabima Authority to farmers to buy rifles

The Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries says that measures will be taken to provide 1000 air rifles to farmers this year to prevent crop damage caused by animals.

These air rifles are to be given to farmers by the Hadabima Authority under a 50% loan scheme. Last year, 750 air rifles were distributed and based on its success, 1000 air rifles will be distributed this year.

Research conducted by the Hector Kobbekaduwa Institute of Agricultural Research and Training has confirmed that between 30% and 40% of the total harvest is eaten by monkeys, Jaint squirrels and peacocks.

The ministry says that although animal rights organizetions have asked to suggest alternative ways to prevent crop damage caused by wild animals, no positive solution has been found.

Air rifles have been very successful in crop protection to monkeys and squirrels. But farmers say air rifles are not very effective in driving away peacocks and wild elephants.
