Liquor and tobacco prices to increase

The government has decided to increase taxes on all types of alcohol with effect from today. Accordingly, these tax rates will increase by six percent.

Meanwhile, Industry Minister Sunil Handunnetti recently said that a health-friendly low-cost alcohol brand will be introduced soon for those who consume alcohol. He also said that this new low-cost alcohol brand will be produced using by-products from the Sevanagala and Pelawatte sugar factories.

The Ceylon Tobacco Company has announced that cigarette prices will be increased under four categories from today. The prices of Capstan and John Player cigarettes have been increased by Rs. 05.00 each, and the price of 83 mm Goldleaf by Rs. 10.00. This step has been taken in conjunction with the government’s increase in excise duty.
