It is reported that Director General of Sports Shemal Fernando is pressuring the Federation of Motorcycle sport of Sri Lanka (FMSSL) to lift the ban on motorcyclist Maduranga Kaldera, who has been banned for one year by the Federation (FMSSL) for disciplinary reasons.
Accordingly, Director General of Sports Shemal Fernando has written to the President of the Auto Sport Federation of Sri Lanka, Rizvi Farooq, to lift the ban on motorcyclist Maduranga Kaldera for participating in the Katukurunda ”Rotherham” race that concluded yesterday.
However, the official operator of motorcycle racing in Sri Lanka is the Federation of Motorcycle sport of Sri Lanka (FMSSL). Therefore, the Auto Sport President has sought advice from the Federation of Motorcycle sport of Sri Lanka on this matter.
Accordingly, the Secretary of the Federation of Motorcycle sport of Sri Lanka (FMSSL), Malinda Karangoda, has sent a detailed letter to the President of the Auto Sport, outlining the reasons for imposing a ban on Maduranga Kaldera, and he has also sent a copy of it to the Director General of Sports.
The Secretary of the Federation, Malinda Karangoda, has further clarified in the letter that the ban was imposed as per a decision of the Disciplinary Committee and that he has no authority to lift it outside the specified procedure.
Despite this, the Director General of Sports, Shemal Fernando, has written a letter to the sports club organizing the Katukurunda race, bypassing the Auto Sport Association and the Sri Lanka Motorcycle sport Federation . In the letter, Director General of Sports ask let Maduranga Caldera, who is serving a one-year ban, to participate in the Katukurunda Rotherham race.
Accordingly, during the eligibility check of Madhuranga Kaldera, it was confirmed that he does not have a valid racing license for the year 2024 and that he does not have the medical records that a motorcyclist should have. Therefore, the organizers of the Katukurunda race have not allowed him to participate in the race.
In response to a query made by our website regarding this, a spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Motorcycle Federation said that it is absolutely unacceptable to allow a rider who has been banned by a disciplinary committee decision to participate in a competition. He also said that if a rider without a license was allowed to compete, the Sri Lanka Motorcycle sport Federation and the Sri Lankan motorcycle racing sport could even be banned by the International Federation.
