Nearly 100 inmates of the Welikanda Kandakadu Rehabilitation Camp escaped yesterday afternoon and a search operation has been started.
The police said that around 5.30 pm yesterday, a group of about 100 inmates who were being rehabilitated in the camp broke the fence of the camp and escaped.
It is reported that these people have fled amid the unrest in the camp. Police and Army have launched a joint operation to find the escaped prisoners.
According to the police, about 15 escaped prisoners were arrested during the operation. It is suspected that this group fled to the Kandakadu forest area and the police said that operations will be launched to find them today.
