The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory warning of potential heavy rains today in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.
Due to atmospheric instability in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, skies will remain cloudy over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and Uva provinces and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts, with intermittent rain or thundershowers likely in these areas. The advisory notes that heavy rains exceeding 100mm may occur at some locations within these regions.
The Department of Meteorology further states that rain or thundershowers may occur at a few places during the evening or night in other sea areas around the island; winds will blow from the southwest or from variable directions at speeds of approximately 25–35 km/h.
In the sea areas extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara, and Hambantota, wind speeds will occasionally reach… Wind speeds may increase up to 50 km/h, and sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil—via Galle, Matara, and Hambantota—will be moderately rough at times. The Department of Meteorology further notes that temporary strong winds and very rough seas may occur in these areas during thundershowers.
The highest rainfall—146.5 mm—recorded between 8:30 AM yesterday (14) and 3:00 AM today (15) was reported from the Waslathalaramaya area in Kirindiwela, Gampaha District.
