Fundamental Rights Petition Filed on Behalf of Elephants

A Fundamental Rights Petition has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking an order to the responsible authorities to prepare a comprehensive plan to reduce elephant-train collisions in Sri Lanka.

The Environmental Justice Center, along with its Chairman and Executive Director, filed the petition, naming the Director General of Wildlife Conservation, the General Manager of Railways, the Inspector General of Police, the Minister of Transport and Highways, the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources and several others as respondents.

The petitioners also request that the respondents be directed to cooperate in implementing necessary mitigation measures, including improving driver visibility on railway tracks by removing undergrowth on both sides of the railway tracks under the supervision of the Department of Forest Conservation and Wildlife.
