Another controversial incident has been reported regarding the Navy’s ‘Gunsite’ camp in Trincomalee.
The Criminal Investigation Department has been able to uncover this chain of events during investigations conducted in connection with the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths from Colombo and its suburbs for the purpose of extorting money during 2008 and 2009.
The Criminal Investigation Department has confirmed before the court that the youths in question were being held at the Navy’s ‘Gunsite’ camp in Trincomalee.
Upon examination of an address written on a wall there, it was confirmed to be the handwriting of the abductee named Shantha Samaraweera.
The Criminal Investigation Department has informed the court that in addition to the 11 youths detained in the ‘Gunsite’ camp, 6 women were also illegally detained there, and 5 of them have been murdered.
The cases regarding these disappearances, which were previously filed in the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court (B2020/2011, B2863/2008, B2513/2008), had been closed due to lack of information.
However, after the Criminal Investigation Department informed the court that the women who were said to have disappeared had been murdered, the Magistrate has ordered the IGP to transfer further investigations into the incident to the Mass Robbery Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department.
