A meeting of opposition political party leaders was held today (25) at the Opposition Leader’s Office under the patronage of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to discuss the political situation arising from the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Opposition Leader, who stated that the arrest of Ranil Wickremesinghe is not an isolated incident but poses a strong challenge to democratic politics, has pointed out the importance of all opposition political parties working together to face that challenge.
The Opposition Leader has emphasized that this discussion was convened to implement a short-term and long-term program with all opposition political parties for this purpose.
Speaking at this meeting, former President Maithripala Sirisena has stated that answers to two main questions must be sought at this time.
The former President has also pointed out that the first is the program to release Ranil Wickremesinghe, and the second is to overcome the challenge to democratic politics in the country.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena has also pointed out that for this, all political parties should put aside their political views and unite.
All political party representatives who participated in this event have stated that it is important for all political parties in the opposition to work together for this.
Stressing the importance of the opposition continuing to work together against Ranil Wickremesinghe’s case as well as the government’s anti-democratic program, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has also taken steps to appoint an action committee with the participation of party secretaries for future activities.
All party leaders who met today have also decided to meet again on August 27 at the Opposition Leader’s office.
