Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
It is reported that the arrest took place this morning when he arrived at the Commission to provide a statement.
The Commission had initiated an investigation into allegations that he accepted a bribe of Rs. 8.1 million from three selected companies. This alleged bribe was in exchange for facilitating phosphate exports for these specific companies—without following due procedure—and assisting them in obtaining the necessary export permits. The arrest was made in connection with this investigation.
Sumathipala Liyanarachchi, who served as his private secretary, has also been arrested in connection with the same investigation and is currently being held in remand custody.
