Cabinet approval has been granted to increase the number of automated passenger clearance gates to be installed at Bandaranaike International Airport to 12.
Accordingly, in addition to the four gates already approved, eight more gates are to be purchased and installed; approval has been granted to initiate the formal procurement process for this purpose.
Approval for the purchase and installation of four automated passenger clearance gates for the airport had previously been granted at the Cabinet meeting held on May 19, 2025. Meanwhile, alongside the e-passport system scheduled for introduction in 2027, the facility—previously restricted to Sri Lankans—is set to be expanded to allow use by foreign nationals entering and leaving the country.
