Bail for Namal.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court ordered today that Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, who was being held in remand custody in connection with the ‘KRISH’ deal, be released on bail.

Although his lawyers requested his release on bail citing the serious ill health of his mother and father as a special circumstance the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (Bribery Commission) opposed the request.

Nevertheless, after considering the submissions made by both parties, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued this order today (03).

Namal Rajapaksa had been arrested by the Bribery Commission on suspicion of accepting a bribe of 70 million rupees to facilitate the allocation of a plot of land at Transworks Square in Colombo to the Indian company ‘KRISH’ for a multi-purpose development project. He was subsequently produced before the court and remanded. However, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa remains in remand custody in connection with a separate case involving SriLankan Airlines.
