The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has requested President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to take steps to appoint a permanent Auditor General as per the Constitution.
The association has made this request to the President in a special letter. The association states that the appointment of the Auditor General is essential to protect the integrity of public financial management and to strengthen international trust.
The letter further points out that since the name previously presented by the President has failed to win the majority of the Constitutional Council, a person who is not politically biased and has expertise in the field and independence who can win the general consensus of the Constitutional Council should be appointed.
Since the former Auditor General retired last April, no permanent officer has been appointed.
