Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara, founder of the Veterinary Association for Animal Catch Management, has stated that dogs are involved in nearly 30% of all road accidents in Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, he noted that this situation has become a significant burden on the national economy.
He further mentioned that the government incurs an annual cost of approximately one billion rupees solely for rabies vaccinations resulting from dog bites.
Dr. Chamith pointed out that irresponsible human behavior and a lack of social responsibility are the primary reasons for the increase in the number of stray dogs on the streets; he also noted that the issue is exacerbated by these abandoned animals scavenging on improperly managed garbage.
