Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne has announced that scientists in this country have discovered new varieties of paddy that can produce 12,000 kilograms of paddy per hectare. The Minister emphasized that with this new discovery, paddy cultivation in the country will definitely be elevated.
Commenting on these new varieties, the Minister said that in the future, paddy production will not be limited to eating rice alone. Commenting on the multiple uses of paddy, he noted that paddy can also be used to feed animals (as animal feed), for beer production and as a substitute for bread flour.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister emphasized the need to transform the paddy production process in this country into a process aimed at the international market. He also requested that a period of three to four seasons be given for this transformation.
