Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has warned of the risk of a massive global food crisis emerging in the coming months.
He points out that the primary causes for this situation include food-producing nations restricting grain exports to maintain strategic reserves, fertilizer shortages, the strong El Niño weather phenomenon, and the disruption of international shipping routes due to conflicts in several countries.
Commenting on global challenges, Jaishankar noted that certain major grain-exporting nations—particularly those transporting supplies via the Black Sea region—could face obstacles. He stated that this would place further severe strain on the global food supply.
The Minister also highlighted emerging issues regarding fertilizer supplies, noting that production activities by major fertilizer producers, including Russia and countries in the Middle East, have been impacted. He also pointed out that the risks posed to food production and supply chains could further intensify due to the El Niño weather phenomenon currently affecting the world and the resulting changes in global weather patterns.
