The Election Commissioner General, Mr. Saman Sri Ratnayake, says that an island-wide program has been initiated to digitize the voter register.
He further said that instead of obtaining the said register in print, this digital register is being prepared to cover 14,000 Grama Niladhari divisions.
The Election Commissioner General expressed these views while addressing the media after a program held at the Kandy District Secretariat today. This program was held to inform the Grama Niladharis about the preparation of the digital voter register and to present certificates of appreciation to 42 Grama Niladharis who contributed to it.
He also said that the digital register will be prepared using online technology instead of recording data on paper.
He also said that the upcoming election will be held based on the 2024 voter list, but the youth who will turn 18 by January 1 of this year will also be included in the new list.
He said that the name list used in the previous local government election will be announced according to the court order and the parliamentary decision, and that it will be decided whether a new name list will be used based on that decision.
He also stated that after receiving that decision, since holding the local government election in March is problematic due to the Advanced Level examinations, it can most likely be held in April.
Pointing out that there is no need to look for any excuse for that, he also stated that the dates and times for holding elections are clearly stated in the election act sections.
Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake further stated that legal action has been initiated against candidates who did not provide asset and liability declarations and income and expenditure declarations during the previous general election.
Kandy District Assistant Election Commissioner Dr. Sampath Fernando also joined the event.
